The Essence of a Spigot Revealed
I. Core Definition
Functional Positioning
Fluid Switch: A mechanical valve that manually shuts off/regulates the flow of liquids (water, oil, or gas).
Low-Pressure Design: The upper pressure limit is typically ≤150 PSI (for high-pressure ball valves and gate valves).
Structural Features: Mainly features a male threaded connector, sealed by a nut.
Easy Opening and Closing: A 90° rotating handle (for ball valves) or a screw lift (for gate valves).
II. Classification
Type | Primary Use Cases | Pro Identification Clues |
Household Spigot | Garden hose / Washing machine | Plastic handle + brass body, anti-siphon vent hole |
Industrial Drain Valve | Oil drums / Chemical tanks | Full stainless cast, handle with lock groove |
Brewing Tap | Beer kegs / Fermenters | Food-grade 304 steel, short stem prevents liquid pooling |
Fire Hydrant Spigot | Fire hose connections | Left-hand threads + crush gasket for instant seal |
III. Crucial Details
Material Life or Death
Brass: The preferred choice for general use, but contains lead—for drinking water, choose the "Lead-Free Brass" stamped version.
Zinc alloy: A cheap trap! Cold water pipes won't last more than two years; hot water will melt and deform.
Stainless steel: A must-have for food/chemical applications; look for the 304/316 steel stamp.
Seal failure points
Rubber gaskets: Expand and fail after exposure to gasoline/diesel fuel, resulting in leakage!
PTFE valve seats: Decompose above 280°C, releasing toxic gases (not suitable for use in baking rooms).
IV. Avoid pitfalls with blood and tears
Mixed corrosion: Copper faucet in aluminum can → Electrochemical corrosion perforation → Oil leakage and fire! (Must be isolated with insulating nylon gasket)
Frost heave explosion: Outdoor faucet in the north is not emptied → Ice supports the valve body → Water floods the Jinshan Mountain! (Choose an anti-freeze model with a pressure relief plug)
Overpressure explosion valve: Connect a household faucet to a high-pressure cleaner → Fragments fly → Break through the garage door! (The pressure value is engraved on the bottom of the valve body)
V. Old gun identification technique
Verify the authenticity
Magnet suction valve body: Stainless steel slightly sucks (304) / Thoroughly sucked = inferior iron chrome plating.
Judging the life by listening to the sound
Finger tap: Crisp metal sound = thick wall good product / Muffled sound = thin wall easy to crack.
Seal test
Blowing with air blocked at the outlet: Blow air with your mouth to the inlet, and listen to the hissing sound with your ear against the valve body → Internal leakage scrapped!
